The lotus finds its strongest symbolism in the purity it exhibits. The rare lotus, which grows in muddy wetlands, does not retain water on its petals. It is protected from all exterior influences and is continuously purified as it keeps itself clean.

Lotus flowers are seen as the "real tender flowers". In China, poems were written about lotus flowers three to four thousand years ago. According to myth, unspeakably magnificent lotus flowers are to be found in the Final Happiness Heaven (the celestial heaven mentioned as the Buddha Amitaba’s heaven).

In Chinese art, the lotus is a pure world in which the body and the soul remain clean.

First and foremost, the lotus has also an ecological feature that distinguishes it from other plants and flowers and makes it a Buddhist icon. While most plants bloom first and then give fruit after shedding their blossoms, the lotus blooms when its fruit is ripe. Thus the lotus has always been considered a representation of the co-existence of the past, present, and future.
